------
Thank you for picking up this album. I hope it finds its way to being tucked between a glass of marbles and holding up the stack of board games on the bottom shelf only to fall out and onto your feet just when you needed to be reminded you're not alone. It's the best I could offer to pay back all the records that have done the same for me.

Special thank you to all the muses in the Bottle House, to everyone walking near the grocery store who threw money into my guitar case that windy winter while I was writing this album, you kept the house warm and my belly full. And to everyone who purchased an advanced copy of this record allowing me to be able to afford to release it. - Palmer T. Lee

Track Name: Rag
There are things that are hidden here,
Things that I've placed under and behind other things,
out of fear or out of wisdom that I might find them too soon.
But you know, I'm always moving toward the time.

Tender footed and tender hearted.
You know, the strong ones they pass through this world just like a kitchen rag,
and you can put them through the ringer and they'll just fit and fold and find
they've got room, now, for a few new stains.

Have you always fallen out of love so easy?
And how do I stop myself from thinking it's just lazy?
But where do I get off thinking anyone could keep on loving me
while my passion never goes but my body is always leaving.

But in my dream it was a hundred dollars in my coat from last winter,
it was my favorite poetry book behind a glass marbles under the shelf,
and it was friendship I'd never noticed before, and it was all in one night's sleep.
Guess I'll just poke around for a bit and I'll keep in touch and I'll go from there.

Oh, and Merry Christmas. And happy birthday. I'm goin back to bed.
Track Name: Aw Jeez
It was just before the weekend,
they kicked god out of the garden
then wondered why she would forsake them.
Aw jeez, aw jeez.

Don't you remember that one time when there was that wise old holy man?
You know the one, he invented the soda can.
And he named it Everything and said "Look, now y'all can just hold it right in your hand."
Aw jeez, aw jeez.

So tell me. Whatchya gettin' all bent out of shape for?
So tell me. Whatchya gettin' all bent out of shape for?
Don't you know who you are?

Just to be the dust in your doorstep,
to kiss the soles of your feet with my dirty lips.
For, what I am as a salve against your skin,
aw jeez. Aw jeez

You've got me singing 'Baby, baby, you're so yummy,
that I wish I could just live inside of your tummy.
Then no one could see me, no one else could eat me, no one else could even try to love me,
aw jeez. Aw jeez.

Just tell me. Whatchya gettin' all bent out of shape for?
So tell me. Whatchya gettin' all bent out of shape for?
Don't you know who you are?

Now, Madrugada, you just walk by and you ruin me,
with your shaking, dripping cup of coffee blessings.
Se, now I'm just a salve for any pain, ailment or poverty. And oh, I believe.
Aw jeez. Aw jeez.

Just tell me. Whatchya gettin' all bent out of shape for?
Just tell me. Whatchya gettin' all bent out of shape for?
Just tell me. Whatchya gettin' all bent out of shape for?
Don't you know who you are?
Track Name: Fat Barred Owl
Your fat Barred Owl in your Bigleaf Maple.
I'll take that one when I return.
Just to chase away all your nightmare evenings.
You'll just stretch your arms and rub your eyes, maybe throw me a wink in the foggy dawn.

I sat on your back, waiting,
just to watch the run rise like I used to do.
And I had a little time so I took it with an old-time
fiddlin saint from Saint Louis, s'aint what I was trying' to do.

Then the sun broke The Sisters, the salt broke my eyes.
It made me feel like a man again.
Oh, but I still longed for those barred feathers.
Couldn't wipe these tears from skin with skin while I'm still soakin this all in.

But today I'm not that fat Barred Owl,
but I've a whole flock sleeping in my eyes.
There was a day that you stepped beside me,
your foot snapped a branch and startled them all and they flew to the Skagit down from the sky.

Your fat Barred Owl in your Bigleaf Maple.
I'll take that one when I return.
Just to chase away all your nightmare evenings.
You'll just stretch your arms and rub your eyes, maybe throw me a wink in the foggy dawn.
Track Name: Uneasy
Forgive me for my distance,
the way you're putting me at ease makes me uneasy.
And I'd just hate to be the cause of disappointment
for someone trying to please me.
You've gotta trust me when I say,
it's only wise to keep me just passed arms reach.
See, it's making me uneasy, the way you're putting me at ease.

I don't know too much about too much
but what I can say is that I just can't say,
while I can't hold you close the last thing I would wish for is for you away.
I reckon it's safe to assume
The way this sounds is about all the sense that it makes.
But such a powerful woman, I'd hate to find you one of my mistakes.

There just ain't no way to know,
but if you think the mystery is transcendable
you must be mistaking me for someone you've been lead to be leave is more sensible.
You see, I may or may not be
hung up on someone who don't give a damn about me,
for now it's just making me uneasy the way you're putting me at ease.

Forgive me for my distance,
the way you're putting me at ease makes me uneasy.
Track Name: So Between Eyes
Oh and now, caught so between eyes.
Deep hazel goblets overflowing with wine.
And your cellar too vast to ever consume
in one single life time.
Tell me. What's a man to do?

Oh and now, caught so between eyes.
If I've merely found, but a meaning to life.
Then I know just what I have got to do.
Just to fend off death
with every muscle, thought, choice and move.

Oh and now, caught so between eyes.
If this really is what salvation is like.
Then just let me be a gnat to your glass
and I'll be laughing and crying
and choking and drowning until I pass.

Oh and now, caught so between eyes.
Here where every morsel tastes just like your thighs.
Well I hope you mind if I just stare for a while,
while the flavors emerge in their own unique styles,
divulging the scents with just the truth left to bare,
oh but until that moment, Love, you cares.

Oh an now, caught so between eyes.
Track Name: Rice and Beets
I had the strangest dream. I had the strangest dream.
I had the strangest dream. Could it mean anything?

I was in your kitchen.  I was cooking up rice and beets.
All the lights were a little dim and all the trees were fast asleep.
You were in the other room but I remember I could still see your feet.
You and your baby were painting pictures and singing songs.
I didn't seem to know the words but, aw, I was singing along.

You had a box of German Shepherd puppies.
Of course they were cute as could be.
Just like you'd been wanting. Then you even offered one to me.
But I said, "You know my life, babe, couldn't handle such responsibility."
You said, "I know, I know, I know, I know too well.
Why do you think I told you all the things you couldn't hear me tell."

Then a man came up from down the stairs, his warm green eyes smiling at me.
Tall and handsome with dirty blonde hair and a voice so strong and sweet.
I knew right away why he was there. I gatta tell ya that my heart did sink.
But then we talked for hours about our last names,
and he said, "I love ya, brother, you know that we are just the same."

I could tell by the way that his arm fit right around ya,
ya'll were so in love.
Then you both asked me, sharing all the words,
"Brother, would you ever give it up?
Give up on that ramblin' life and come settle in with us?"
And I must have laughed so hard that I woke myself up.
Cause I laid there wondering just what my answer was.
I laid there wondering what my answer would be.
That's all I remember, I must have fallen right back to sleep.
Track Name: Moon You
Unnoticed, I'd sacrificed my peace
just for a strand of your hair bathed in a drop of your sweat.
Of course the bargain wilted and life began to starve,
neglected for my fascination with out separateness.
Though I continued to throw food at it's face without watching
but of course I was only making a mess.

But keep your eyes peeled and this world is gonna moon you honey.
Just cause we all love your voice and we're just hoping you'll think that it's funny.
We've been missing the sound. We've been missing the sound.
The sound of your laugh. The sound of your laugh.

Unwelcome, just a change in the charge
unsettled by the settling of my hoboing arms.
Yet the bookshelf was mounted, but all for a spider's bed,
and it was high upon the top rung where I'd come to lay my head.
But I continued to pound and sand those boards without watching.
Of course I was only making a mess.

But keep your eyes peeled and this world is gonna moon you honey.
Just cause we all love your voice and we're just hoping you'll think that it's funny.
We've been missing the sound. We've been missing the sound.
The sound of your laugh. The sound of your laugh.
Track Name: Winebringer
In the space between a tickle and an itch
you'll find love and anger and what the difference is.
See, I ain’t been making ends meet in going on three months.
The wood shed ran dry some time last night
and I've been wishing you'd come cover me up.
But I know it's colder up there,
and even colder in there.
Just tell me. Where did you go? Winebringer

All my friends know I was not sober
for the entire month of October.
I was working hard to spend an entire summer's wages,
trying quiet these voices,
trying to quell these rages.
But not a single glass contained the medicine you poor.
I'm just spoiled now and begging for more.
So tell me. Where did you go? Winebringer

God's a slack jawed moonshine stiller
tucked away in the Cascades.
You're the buxom, flirty tender
I can't believe the fool I made.
I got sloppy and passed out on your floor.
While I was sleeping you just swept me out the door.
So tell me. Where did you go? Winebringer
Track Name: Fiddle Bow
How does the fiddle bow out those words that tear me down
while the band just sang a hundred of them but I couldn't hear a sound
except for the fiddle bow and those hot licks that lay me out.
Even the bodhisattvas couldn't save me from the cross and the crown
only the fiddle bow could double stop me in my tracks
while the rain scatters the scents about till there ain’t no comin' back
except to the fiddle bow.

Only the fiddle bow could really say what's on my mind,
how I'm still feeling high from remembering your eyes
fixed on that fiddle bow just the way that you saw me
hearing the words between the words for more than you thought I could be.
But aw, that fiddle bow, with every scratch and swoop and pass
forgives the fears of the future and the sins of the past
as the whole world laughs along with the fiddle bow.

And those hot sulfur waters soften my toes,
still my hands are stained red as you'll ever know.
Though they steam and they roll down off the end of my nose
nothing could wash me clean it seems
except for the fiddle bow.
