lyrics

I had the strangest dream. I had the strangest dream.
I had the strangest dream. Could it mean anything?

I was in your kitchen.  I was cooking up rice and beets.
All the lights were a little dim and all the trees were fast asleep.
You were in the other room but I remember I could still see your feet.
You and your baby were painting pictures and singing songs.
I didn't seem to know the words but, aw, I was singing along.

You had a box of German Shepherd puppies.
Of course they were cute as could be.
Just like you'd been wanting. Then you even offered one to me.
But I said, "You know my life, babe, couldn't handle such responsibility."
You said, "I know, I know, I know, I know too well.
Why do you think I told you all the things you couldn't hear me tell."

Then a man came up from down the stairs, his warm green eyes smiling at me.
Tall and handsome with dirty blonde hair and a voice so strong and sweet.
I knew right away why he was there. I gatta tell ya that my heart did sink.
But then we talked for hours about our last names,
and he said, "I love ya, brother, you know that we are just the same."

I could tell by the way that his arm fit right around ya,
ya'll were so in love.
Then you both asked me, sharing all the words,
"Brother, would you ever give it up?
Give up on that ramblin' life and come settle in with us?"
And I must have laughed so hard that I woke myself up.
Cause I laid there wondering just what my answer was.
I laid there wondering what my answer would be.
That's all I remember, I must have fallen right back to sleep.
